[Class 23] Soot and other particles are separated from gases in a centrifugal separator where a flowing water film constitutes a screen round the rotating gases to trap the solid particles thrown outwards by centrifugal force. The separator has a cylindrical chamber 1 with a tangential inlet 2, a clean gas axial outlet 3 and a dependent conical chamber with a discharge outlet 5 for separated solids. A conical cap 13 on a cylindrical wall 12 is supported by stays 11 and assists the entering gases to keep to the outer region of the chamber 1. Plates 14 are attached to the stays 11 to prevent the formation of eddy currents. Water is supplied through a pipe 9 and flexible connections 8 to a number of nozzles 6 so as to form a film which travels down the wall of the separating chamber to carry the separated particles to the outlet 5. The nozzles are held adjustably in sleeves by set screws. In a modification an axial gas inlet is provided and the entering gas is caused to rotate by vanes arranged between the inlet wall and the conical cap 13 which is provided with a skirt or drip flange. |
