A system for pyrolysis or gasification has a first pyrolysis or gasification unit 50 connected to a second pyrolysis or gasification unit 53 by a hermetically sealed gas path. The first or second units may be a rotatable retort and each unit may be enclosed in a thermally insulated housing 40, 1040 with an exhaust duct 7, 59 connecting the interior of the first thermally insulated housing 40 to the interior of the second thermally insulated housing 1040. Exhaust from a heating system (52, Fig. 5) of the first unit 50 may heat the second unit 53. The gas produced by the first pyrolysis or gasification unit 50 may have a moisture content which may reach a supercritical state such as superheated steam in the second unit 53 if the temperature and pressure in the second unit are sufficient. A pyrolysis method is also claimed where gas produced in a first pyrolysis or gasification unit 50 undergoes further pyrolysis or gasification in a second unit 53. |
