摘要 An organic compound containing a polymerizable unsaturated linkage, or a mixture of such compounds, is polymerized by heating with a catalyst consisting of a dialkyl peroxide, R-O-O-R1, where R and R1 are unsubsituted alkyl groups. Specified organic compounds are ethylene, vinyl thiolacetate, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl methyl ether, styrene, carbon monoxide, trioxane, N - vinylphthalimide, propylene, vinylidene chloride, isobutylene, butadiene-1,3, isoprene, 2 - chloro - butadiene - 1,3, maleic anhydride, maleic and fumaric acid esters, vinyl esters, ethers and ketones, acrylic acids and esters, amides, nitriles, N-vinylamides, e.g. N-vinyl maleimide, N-vinyl succinimide, limonene, and carboxylic acid esters of unsaturated alcohols. Specified catalysts are diethyl, dimethyl, dipropyl, propyl-ethyl and propyl-methyl peroxides. The preferred catalyst concentration is from 0.001 to 5 per cent, the temperature usually from 65 DEG to 200 DEG C., and pressure is generally employed. Oxygen may be kept out of the apparatus by using an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. The polymerization may be carried out with or without solvent, e.g. water, benzene, dioxane, isooctane, ethyl acetate and tertiary butyl alcohol. In examples, diethyl peroxide is used to polymerize (1) ethylene and water; (2) ethylene, water and borax; (3) vinyl acetate and isooctane; (4) methyl methacrylate, ethylene and isooctane; (5) vinyl methyl ether; (6) styrene; (7) ethylene, carbon monoxide, water and borax; (8) trioxane (alphatrioxymethylene), water and sulphuric acid; (9) vinyl thioeacetate; (10) vinyl acetate and water; (11) N-vinylphthalimide, ethylene and tert-butyl alcohol; and (16) ethylene, water and borax; and dimethyl peroxide is used to polymerize ethylene in the presence of water.
