[Class 64 (i)] In regenerative heat exchanging apparatus, such as air preheaters, in which heat transmitting material is packed into compartments 2 formed by radial and circumferential division plates 3, 4 in a cylindrical rotor 1, which rotates inside a stationary casing connected to ducts conveying the working fluids to and from the apparatus, each end of the casing has a door 13 which is large enough to give ready and direct access from outside to the compartments of the rotor and to allow the heat transmitting material to be washed while it remains in its compartment of the rotor. In the form shown in Fig. 3, in which the rotor has a vertical axis, the vertical webs of girders 6 supporting the top and bottom walls of the casing in which the rotor rotates are splayed to accommodate the doors 13. Below the lower door, between the ducts for the fluids, is a gallery with a perforated floor above a trough, to receive liquid draining from the packing during washing. The packing for the rotor is composed of corrugated metal sheets 18, Fig. 6, arranged in shells 50 in bundles which can be lifted out bodily with their shells when the upper door is open. Each bundle includes horizontal supporting and lifting bars 21: Each compartment may contain a single bundle which is narrower than the opening left by the cover, the spaces between the shells 50 and the radial partitions 3 being filled by liners composed of alternating plane and corrugated sheets 15, 16 clamped to the partitions 3. In another form, Fig. 17, in which the radial seals 11b between the radial division plates 3b of the rotor and the end walls of the casing do not project beyond the forward side of the radial plates 3b, each compartment of the rotor contains two bundles C, D, of corrugated plates, with plane plates 20b and bearing bars 21b. When the bundles are. to be removed, the bundle C is first lifted out directly and the bundle D is then moved laterally before lifting. In apparatus in which the axis of rotation of the rotor is horizontal, the doors are provided in the lower parts of the vertical end walls of the casing, and the circumferential wall of the casing is formed as a trough below the doors. |
