Ethers, particularly ethyl ether, are purified by treatment with hydroxylamine or its salts, to remove aldehydes. The treated product can be partly dried and then distilled to remove all impurities. Instead of a pure hydroxylamine salt, the mixture produced by reacting sulphur dioxide with sodium nitrite and sodium carbonate may be used. Concentrated potassium carbonate solution may be used to dry the product. |
