摘要 590,683. Gyroscopic apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 18, 1943, No.' 9887. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1941. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXI, XXXVII and XXXVIII] The reversible motor of a follow-up system is controlled by a gyro in accordance with the speed and extent of movement of the cage of a differential gear, the sun-wheels of which are driven respectively by the control handle and the motor. As shown, the turret of a tank is driven by hand in one axial position of a hand wheel and by an electric motor controlled by the hand wheel in another. With the latter setting, the hand wheel 21 drives one sunwheel 87 of a differential gear of which the other is driven by the motor 31. The cage of the planet-wheels, which are driven frictionally by the sun-wheels, drives a shaft 49 through a slipping clutch to an extent limited by stops 131 and this shaft, by means of an arm 51, rotates a gyroscope 43 pivoted horizontally in a freely rotatable frame 47. The gyro precesses, against springs 65, 67 (which also act as shock-absorbers) to an extent depending on the speed of shaft 49 and an arm 41 carried eccentrically by it is then moved to a position which depends jointly on the extent of rotation and the speed of shaft 49 and acts accordingly on two groups of contacts 35, 42 to insert resistance in one and remove it from the other of the circuits of two field windings of a generator G feeding the motor 31. The arm 51 engages the gyro through friction shoes 55, 57, Fig. 6, to damp its movements, the friction being greater the greater the velocity of movement about the horizontal axis. Push-buttons enable the turret to be driven continuously in either direction. Specifications 590,681, [Group XXI], and 590,682 are referred to.
