[Class 53] An expander to be added to the active material of the negative plates of storage batteries consists of a mixture of sawdust, straw, corncobs, peat moss or other lignin containing material, the oxide or hydroxide of an alkali metal and an alkaline earth metal, carbon black and waste sulphite liquor. In an example the mixture consists of red oak sawdust, sodium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, carbon black and waste sulphite liquor and is added to the active material to the extent of 0.1 to 1.2 per cent by weight. The mixture may be prepared by introducing the sawdust and carbon black into water and adding solutions of sodium hydroxide and barium hydroxide and boiling the mixture for six hours. The waste sulphite liquor is then added and the boiling continued for another two hours. The liquid is then filtered off and the solid residue dried and ground. |
