A base adapter 100 for a modular system comprises a power input interface 106 configured to be user-attachable to and user-detachable from standardised interfaces of an electrical power distribution system, such as a domestic light bulb socket, one or more power-data interfaces 102, which are configured to be user-attachable to and user-detachable from an appliance module 10 and to transfer power and data between the base adapter and an attached appliance module, and a controller 104 configured to control at least data transfer from each of the one or more interfaces. The appliance modules have circuitry 14 to carry out a different function from the base adapter (such as a smoke alarm or an ioniser) and are held by a retainer 16. |
