A user connected to the internet 107 via a user device 103, 104 and optionally playing a musical instrument 101, 102 selects a music item e.g. a song to play either by selecting an item or list of items, or by starting to play and the service automatically recognising the item. A subset of users (figures 2-3) from an online group are identified based on skill level, reputation, playing style, history and/or a users preferences who are or can play the item selected by the first user, for example the same track on a different instrument, and their music is provided to the user. A visualisation, such as an image of the music item being played, may be provided e.g. using virtual reality glasses at the same time as the music item, and a more appealing visualisation may be provided on better playing or more users listening to the music item. The subset may be defined manually by the user or automatically. The playing of the music may be provided in real time. Thus the invention facilitates forming a virtual band. The invention may be more widely applied for any group online activity. |
