PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery increased in initial capacity arising rate.SOLUTION: [1] A secondary battery 1 comprises: a positive electrode 11; a negative electrode 13; and an electrolyte 12. In the secondary battery, the electrolyte includes a cation and an anion; the positive electrode has a positive electrode active material which is capable of releasing the cation and occluding the anion in charging the battery; and the negative electrode includes a negative electrode active material capable of occluding the cation in charging the battery, and a compound capable of releasing the anion in charging the battery. [2] The secondary battery described in the above [1], in which the anion is a halide ion. [3] The secondary battery described in the above [1] or [2], in which the cation is a cation of at least one element selected from a group consisting of elements of Groups I, II and XIII.
