A first method of producing a metal comprises forming briquettes from a mixture of calcined metal oxide and a reductant, the briquettes are then placed in the furnace where the oxide is reduced by the reductant. Between briquetting and placement in the furnace the briquettes are maintained in a carbon dioxide free atmosphere. In a second method producing metal by reduction plural reduction furnaces are operated with each furnace having a heating stage, a cooking stage where metal is extracted and a cooling stage. Heat extracted from a first furnace in the cooling stage is used to heat a second furnace in the heating stage. This is done by passing a cooling gas through the first furnace, using a heat exchanger to heat a heating gas and passing this heating gas through the second furnace. The methods are used to extract alkali metals and alkaline earth metals such as magnesium. |
