The processing system may also be programmed to receive an indication of a user presence within the first responsive range from the first proximity sensor and an indication of the user presence within the second responsive range from the second proximity sensor and cause the user interface to transition from the second graphical display to the first graphical display.

A thermostat comprising: a housing; a user interface configured to display at least a first graphical display and a second graphical display; one or more temperature sensors, each of the one or more temperature sensors being configured to provide temperature sensor measurements; a processing system disposed within the housing, the processing system being configured to be in operative communication with the one or more temperature sensors to receive the temperature sensor measurements, in operative communication with one or more input devices including the user interface for determining a setpoint temperature, and in still further operative communication with a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to control the HVAC system based at least in part on the setpoint temperature and the temperature sensor measurements; a first proximity sensor having a first responsive range, the first proximity sensor generating a response when a user is located within the first responsive range; a second proximity sensor having a second responsive range, the second proximity sensor generating a response when a user moves within the second responsive range, the second responsive range being greater than the first responsive range; wherein the processing system is programmed or configured to control the user interface by performing operations comprising: receiving an indication of a user presence within the second responsive range from the second proximity sensor while not receiving an indication of a user presence within the first responsive range from the first proximity sensor;in response to receiving the indication of a user presence within the second responsive range while not receiving the indication of a user presence within the first responsive range, causing the user interface to display the second graphical display;receiving an indication of a user presence within the first responsive range from the first proximity sensor and an indication of the user presence within the second responsive range from the second proximity sensor; andin response to receiving the indication of a user presence within the first responsive range and the indication of a user presence within the second responsive range, causing the user interface to transition from the second graphical display to the first graphical display.
