1. A cationic iridium III complex including a ligand according to formula I: wherein nitrogen atoms N1 and N2 coordinate to iridium;
X and Y are independently for each occurrence selected from C or N; and eitheri) R1 and R2 are independently for each occurrence selected from the group consisting of —H, substituted or unsubstituted primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl, that may be cyclic and may be saturated or unsaturated; substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heteroaryl, halogen, —CF3, —CN, —SF5, —SO3, —S(O)R, —NO2, —NR2, —OR, —C(O)R, —C(O)OR, —C(O)NR, —SR, —C(S)R, —S(O)2R, —S(O)2NR, —ROC(O)NR2, and ROC(O)N(R)R—,wherein each group R when present on a substituent R1 or R2 is, independently for each occurrence, selected from substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, that may be cyclic and may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl, or R1 and R2 are absent when dictated by the valency of X or Y; orii) one of the pairs of adjacent R1 and R2 groups is fused to form a ring that may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, may contain heteroatoms and may have one or more further rings fused to it;and the other R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of —H, substituted or unsubstituted primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl, that may be cyclic and may be saturated or unsaturated; substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heteroaryl, halogen, —CF3, —CN, —SF5, —SO3, —S(O)R, —NO2, —NR2, —OR, —C(O)R, —C(O)OR, —C(O)NR, —SR, —C(S)R, —S(O)2R, —S(O)2NR, —ROC(O)NR2, and ROC(O)N(R)R—, wherein each group R when present on a substituent R1 or R2 is, independently for each occurrence, selected from substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, that may be cyclic and may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl or are absent when dictated by the valency of X or Y; or iii) both pairs of adjacent R1 and R2 groups are each fused to form a ring that may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, may contain heteroatoms and may have one or more further rings fused to it; and wherein Z is a hydrocarbylene linking group comprising at least two carbon atoms in a chain linking N3 and N4, wherein Z is substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbylene or unsaturated hydrocarbylene optionally includes one or more heteroatoms replacing one or more carbon atoms in the hydrocarbylene chain, and optionally has one or more saturated, unsaturated or aromatic rings fused to the chain. |
