Controlling operational characteristics of acoustic echo canceller

A controller 201 for an acoustic echo canceller 202 (AEC), the acoustic echo canceller being configured to estimate an echo component comprised in a microphone signal. The controller comprises a noise estimator for estimating a level of noise in the microphone signal relative to the echo component, perhaps as an echo-to-noise ratio (ENR). The controller also comprises an echo estimator for estimating a level of the echo component in the microphone signal, and a control module 211 configured to control an operational characteristic of the AEC in dependence on both of these estimates. The controller might control the response of an adaptive filter 205 in the AEC, perhaps through an adaptation factor. The AEC might also include a non-linear processor 208 (NLP) and a double-talk detector 209. The echo component could represent part of a far-end signal.
