692,919. Quick action lock nuts. DONOVAN, R. F. March 14, 1952 [March 16, 1951 ], No. 6694/52. Class 89 (i) Quick action lock nuts, particularly applicable for securing covers to access openings in aeroplane wings &c., comprise a conical shell 13 containing a number, such as three, of corresponding coned nut sections 24 each of which is splined on a key welded to the shell. Tension springs 36 draw the segments in their free state towards the larger end of the shell. A cup 38 has connected to it by a tubular rivet 40 a spider 39 with resilient legs 41 engaging the nut segments on their larger ends. The shell is closed by a welded on cover plate 26 and is fitted with a flanged on dust cover 43, and has rectilinear flanges 14 confined by the turned over ends 18 of an anchoring plate 17 provided with raised abutments, to prevent the nut sliding longitudinally of the retaining flange, and with holes for attachments to the structural member 11. When a screw is inserted it is pushed against the cup 38 and the legs of the spider pressed centrally against the edge of the aperture in the cover plate act as levers and force the nut sections down to close them on the screw, which is then given a few turns to effect final clamping and locking. |
