PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a card reader configured to reduce the cost and to prevent a criminal from illegally acquire magnetic information even when it can be detected whether magnetic data has been recorded in a magnetic strip of a card inserted through a card slot.SOLUTION: A card reader includes: a magnetic sensor 8 for detecting whether magnetic data has been recorded in a magnetic stripe of a card; and a control section 14 which supplies electronic power to the magnetic sensor 8 and receives an output signal of the magnetic sensor 8. The magnetic sensor 8 outputs the output signal when electric power is supplied from the control section 14. The control section 14 supplies electric power to the magnetic sensor 8 for a first supply time which is shorter than a card passing time, the first supply time being a period of time from when a recording area of the magnetic data recorded in the magnetic stripe of the card inserted through a card slot starts to pass through the magnetic sensor 8 to when the recording area completely passes through the magnetic sensor 8.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
