708,437. Mounting bearings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 24, 1951 [May 4, 1950], No. 9504/51. Class 12(1) In a rotating machine, a shaft 15 is supported by an axially fixed bearing at one end, and by a bearing mounted in a flexible diaphragm so as to permit axial movement thereof, at the other end. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the left hand bearing is rigidly secured within the end shield 12 by a ring 20 and fixing screws 21. The right hand bearing is secured within a cartridge 22 by a ring 23 and screws 24. The cartridge 22 has three circumferentially spaced outwardly extending bosses 25 which are disposed between inwardly projecting bosses 28 formed on the right hand end shield 13. The faces of all the bosses are rabbetted to receive a spring steel annular diaphragm which is secured thereto. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flexible diaphragm is secured to the cartridge along its. inner diameter by bolts 48, and is secured to the housing by bolts 50 at circumferentially spaced points on its outer diameter, flexibility of the diaphragm being assisted by the provision of openings 49a in the disc, and pressure plates 53 each side of the diaphragm at the points where it is secured to the housing. |
