An image processing method for improving face detection performance comprises the steps of: performing histogram equalization on at least a portion of pixels among pixels included in an original image; and selectively applying unsharp masking to the image, on which the histogram equalization was performed, based on a histogram which is extracted from the original image. According to the present invention, face detection performance in an illumination sensitive environment such as in a counterlight can be improved by selectively applying the unsharp masking on an image.
