摘要 716,142. Change-speed gear; locking levers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 23, 1952 [Feb. 14, 1951], No. 1817/52. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3) [Also in Group XXXIV] A four speed and reverse gear unit has an auxiliary gear unit in series with it which transmits either a direct or reduced drive. Each unit is hydraulically operated and has a manual control valve connected to a common operating member in such a manner that the auxiliary gear unit ratio' can be changed only when the main gear unit is in neutral. In the heavy vehicle transmission shown the auxiliary unit comprises an epicyclic train in which the sun gear 76 is connected to the output shaft 41 of the gear described in Specification 716,134, the planet carrier 79 is connected to the final output shaft 75, and the ring gear 80 is either clutched to the sun gear for a direct drive or braked for a reduced drive. A plate clutch 83, 84 between sun and ring gears is engaged by an hydraulic piston 86 and released by springs 88. The ring gear 80 is splined to a conical member 89 which may be gripped between a stationary ring 92 and an hydraulic piston 94, wave-washer springs 91, 95 serving to move these members out of contact when the brake is disengaged. The brake and clutch are engaged alternately by oil under pressure directed by a valve 340, Fig 7, to lines 370, 371 and thence to the operating cylinders 94a, 87. A pump 99, Figs. 1a, 7 driven from the. shaft 75 supplies pressure oil to a, regulator valve as also does a front pump P driven from the input shaft of the main gear unit. The .valve 341 and a check valve 342 direct oil from the pumps to the hydraulic actuators in accordance with the pressures generated by the pumps. The rear pump 99 is thus enabled to supply the main unit servos in the event of push starting the vehicle engine. A check valve 343 cuts off the pump supply when the line pressure is low, the auxiliary unit then being supplied by an accumulator 384 which ensures a rapid action of the unit and prevents an excessive pressure drop. The automatic ratio selecting a servo-control mechanism of the main unit differs from that of Specification 716,134 in that the valve 209 is responsive to the engine manifold depression acting on a piston 205 when the .operator's manual lever is placed in one position F-1. The control pressure in a line 312 is then dependent upon the throttle opening. When the operator's lever is in another position F-2 the valve 170 directs oil under pressure to the valve 209 overcoming the engine manifold vacuum and allowing full pump pressure to act in the line 312 which pressure acts on the automatic valves 220, 251, 276 to delay their selection of the higher gear ratios. A manual control lever 411, Figs 13, 14, is pivotally mounted about perpendicularly disposed pivots 406, 409 and is movable in a gate 402, Fig. 15. Movement in each of the slots 403, 405 allows the valve 170 controlling the main unit to be placed in either of its positions N, F-1. F-2, R corresponding to neutral, automatic selection of the gear ratio in accordance with the vehicle speed with and without modification according to throttle opening, and reverse gear. A linkage 415, 416 connects the control lever to the valve 170 for this purpose the lever rotating with its pivot 406. Movement of the control lever 411 between the slots 403, 405 is possible only through the slot 404, in which case the valve 170 is in its neutral position. Movement in the slot 404 of the lever 414 about its pivot 409 is transmitted by a linkage 419, 420 to the valve 340 to select either direct or reduction drive through the auxiliary unit. The lever 411 is urged axially by a spring 413 to engage a pin 414 with notches beneath the gate 402 and thereby lock the lever in either of its operative positions. Specification 716,170 also is referred to.
