Abstract The present invention provides an electronic gaming machine (1) comprising a display (7) for displaying game symbols for playing a game of chance (8) on a plurality of reels (12). An electronic game controller (4) assigns a number of special symbols (10e) to one or more reel strips associated with the reels (12), the number of special symbols being variable and dependent on a first bet value selected by a player. The appearance of at least two special symbols (10e) causes the electronic game controller (4) to activate a bonus game of chance (45) comprising the award of at least one the bonus prize (30) in response to a predetermined outcome of the bonus game of chance.
