A hybrid power source comprises: a fuel cell assembly 1; an electrochemical battery 2; and a current blocking element, e.g. a diode 6, to prevent current stored in the battery 2 from flowing into the fuel cell assembly 1. The hybrid power source does not include a current control component, e.g. a DC-DC convertor, for current generated by the fuel cell assembly 1 flowing to the battery 2. In a second aspect the electrical connection between the fuel cell assembly 1 and the battery 2 comprises a switch (figure 5, 57) configured to prevent current flowing from the fuel cell assembly 1 to the battery 2 when a voltage output of the fuel cell assembly 1 is greater than the maximum voltage of the battery 2, the switch (figure 5, 57) not being affected by the instantaneous battery voltage. In a third aspect the fuel cell assembly 1, is configured so that the maximum open circuit voltage is less than or equal to a threshold voltage related to the maximum output voltage of the battery 2, and the current output at full power is capable of meeting the C rate of the battery 2, when the battery is operating at its operational lower voltage limit. |
