Handheld dimensioning system comprising receiving range data, creating depth map from range data, processing depth map to determine its quality, such as null-data pixel count, and generating error feedback if depth map quality is below quality threshold, such as null-data pixel count being above threshold count. If null-data pixel count is at or below threshold count then dimension measurement is computed. Depth map may comprise digital image of portable dimensioners field of view with values corresponding to distance between dimensioner and object. Null-data pixels with zero value (missing range data) may comprise single value (black pixel) indicating range measurement not possible. Confidence feedback in wireframe rendering of object may be displayed, with indication of standard conformation. User-guidance feedback may facilitate measurement geometry or lighting adjustment. Structured light pattern may be used for dimensioning. Logistics and shipping companies need to compute package volume to facilitate storage, handling, transporting and/or invoicing because vehicles have volume and weight capacity limits and space inefficiencies result if vehicle is full before its weight capacity is reached. Dimensioning system environments can be harsh because of lighting and object positioning / colouring issues. This invention involves hands-free measurement of object volume with feedback minimising dimensioning errors. |
