<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce light quantity unevenness and color sensitivity unevenness when a plurality of light emitting elements different in luminous colors are lighted and a color image is read as a monochromatic image. <P>SOLUTION: An image reader includes: lighting means which includes a plurality of light emitting elements LED-R, LED-G and LED-B having different luminous colors and irradiates a subject with light radiated from the light emitting elements; photoelectric conversion means which converts a subject image in response to reflection light from the subject into a charge image; lighting time setting means which sets arbitrary lighting time on the plurality of light emitting elements; and lighting control means which controls a light emitting state of the plurality of light emitting elements in accordance with the lighting time which is set by the lighting time setting means.
