PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of detecting a sheet type accurately without reducing productivity of image formation, and performing image formation based on an optimum printing condition corresponding to the sheet type.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises: a feeding unit performing a feeding operation of sheets from a sheet loading unit at the uppermost stream of a conveyance unit; and an image forming unit. The image forming apparatus further comprises: a smoothness output unit for detecting and outputting a smoothness index value in a non-contact manner based on regular reflection light from a detection position of the sheet on the sheet loading unit; and a printing condition determination unit for determining a printing condition based on the smoothness index value. For two continuous sheets, the smoothness output unit detects and outputs a smoothness index value of a second sheet based on the amount of regular reflection light after a rear end of a first sheet has passed the detection position. The feeding unit performs a feeding operation of the second sheet after the smoothness output unit has output the smoothness index value of the second sheet.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6 |
