Provided is a variable resistor having excellent linearity characteristics. A position sensor 10 used as a variable resistor includes an insulation substrate 12. On one main surface of the insulation substrate 12, a resistor pattern 28 and a collector pattern 30 are formed apart. A first contacting element 36a and a second contacting element 36b of a sliding element 32 are formed so as to slide on the center portion 28b of the resistor pattern 28, and on the collector pattern 30. In this position sensor 10, the surface roughness Rz of the one main surface of the insulating substrate 12 is formed to be, for example, 0.3 μm, the average thickness of the resistor pattern 28 is formed to be, for example, 8 μm, and the following relationship is satisfied: average thickness of the resistor pattern 30/surface roughness Rz of the one main surface of the insulating substrate ≥ 10. |
