783,985. Nuclear reactors. STITCHTING REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND. March 7, 1955 [March 8, 1954], No. 6645/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, a suspension of solid fissile material in a moderating carrier liquid e.g. natural or enriched uranium articles in common or heavy water, is circulated continuously downwards through a vertical cylindrical chamber. The suspension is passed from the base of the chamber, through a heat exchanger, to a return system connected to nozzles at the upper end of the chamber by gas injected between the return of the heat exchanger as described in Specification 755,495. The suspension is diluted after leaving the heat exchanger to facilitate the recycling as described in Specification 757,015. Turbulence in the suspension is suppressed by certical partitioning in the upper part of the chamber. Vertical circulating currents are counteracted by introducing a small rotary motion round the longitudinal axis of the chamber by inclining a section of the partitioning. To increase the concentration of fissile material towards the chamber periphery some of the nozzles may be directed tangentially. |
