Class 100(4) In a printing interpreter having means to print horizontal lines of characters on a card, card stops 46 for positioning the card with regard to the several lines on the card, and means operated by control holes to selectively operate the card stops to determine the printing lines, printing means are divided into a number of separate units in order to print separately on different portions of the same line. As shown in Fig. 25, printing by type bars may occur in the fortyfive columns or the printing may be arranged in two units of twenty two with blocking means to suppress printing in one of the units at a time or to block printing in all or no columns. Up to twenty-six lines may be printed in either the upper or lower zone of the card, thirteen lines on each side; switches relays and magnets are provided to automatically switch printing from one side of the card to the other. Card positioning may be effected by the manual setting of the card stops or by an automatic line feed mechanism which is set by moving a lever 48 to the right, Fig. 2, and an interlock prevents a manual setting lever 47 from being operated. Operation of lever 48 moves an arm 55, Fig. 7, which shifts a slide 57 clear of notches 59 in a series of latches 40 which coact with the card stops 46, Figs. 6, 7. During automatic line-feeding and printing of a trailer card the card stops 46, Figs. 6, 7, are raised as required under the control of holes in the end columns of the lower zone of a leading card. The cards pass through a sensing chamber B, Fig. 1, and for each control hole in the card a Bowden wire 24 is operable and extends to a switch frame 28 to condition contacts for the operation of electromagnets which through further cables 34, Figs. 2 and 7, control bell cranks 36 and thus the latches 40. Coacting with the latches 40 are the card stops 46 vertically reciprocated by a cyclically controlled cam mechanism so that the latches, which are horizontally reciprocated by a slide 81, are allowed to return to cause pins 77 to engage in recesses 78 in the stops, unless the return is blocked by a control crank 36. After each line is printed the card is passed through a reproducer to receive an additional control hole, one at a time, and the card is again fed into the printing interpreter. A gate mechanism of known kind is provided to segregate the cards upon the sensing of an outfiler code, Fig. 25, in a lead card or the sensing of a fully printed trailer card. The blocking of printing is controlled by a nullifier code perforation.
