A system for controlling river flow has a weir partially extending across a width of a river and an off-take channel for diverting water from the river. The off-take channel has an inlet upstream of the weir and a higher invert than an invert of the river adjacent the 5 off-take inlet. The weir and off-take channel are arranged such that when the height of the river is at or above a predetermined height, the river flow through a first part of a width of the river is at least partially impeded by the weir, the river flow through a second part of the width of the river is substantially unimpeded by the weir, and a portion of the river flow will flow into the off-take channel. When the height of the river 0 is below the predetermined height, the river flow is substantially unimpeded and does not flow into the off-take channel. A method of controlling river flow and a method of constructing a system for controlling river flow are also provided. |
