SEPTAL OCCLUSION DEVICES AND METHODS

A magnetic device and method are disclosed for providing a safer and more reliable technique for closing a hole or rupture in the septum of the heart. A device is disclosed with proximal and distal occluders that are connected to one another via a catheter and are inserted on either side of the hole or rupture. Also disclosed are two patches that are placed on either side of the hole or rupture with at least one of the patches being composed of magnetic material with the other being magnetic or metallic.

1. A method, comprising the steps of:
endovascularly introducing at least part of a device into the patient, the device comprising:
an elongate covering,a catheter positioned at least partially within the covering, the catheter having a first occluder removably affixed thereto and a second occluder slidably engaged upon the catheter, anda stabilizer positioned at least partially around the catheter; advancing the device within a vasculature of the patient so that the first occluder, when discharged from an opening of the elongate covering, is positioned through an aperture of a septum and is located distal to the septum against the septum; moving the stabilizer relative to the elongate covering so to discharge the second occluder so that it is located proximal to the septum against the septum and so that the first occluder and the second occluder close the opening; and removing the catheter from the vasculature; wherein the method is performed to treat a condition of the patient.
