To provide an opening and closing mechanism having a simple structure and making it possible to open and close a lid with one touch. An opening and closing mechanism for a container making it possible to open and close a lid with one touch, the opening and closing mechanism including a latching part (21) provided upright on the lid (12), a lock piece (40) disposed on a container body (11) so as to have the latching part engaged thereto when the lid is closed, and a lock piece accommodating chamber (31) disposed on the container body so as to have an opening part (32) through which the latching part can pass. The latching part is provided with a support part (22) provided upright on the lid and a latching protrusion (23) provided upright at the end of the support part. The lock piece is provided, on the surface thereof, with an entry/exit port part (41) through which the latching protrusion can enter and exit, an engaging part (42) to which the latching protrusion can engage, and a cam groove (43) extending from the entry/exit port part to the engaging part and back to the entry/exit port part. The lock piece is accommodated in the lock piece housing chamber so as to be slidable in a direction orthogonal to the direction of entry of the latching protrusion. A part of the cam groove curves in the direction parallel to the sliding direction of the lock piece, and the entry/exit port part of the lock piece communicates with the opening part of the lock piece housing chamber.
