Provided is a sheet separation method whereby it is possible to form an air space between a sheet on the uppermost layer and another sheet and separate the sheet on the uppermost layer. A sheet (10a) on the uppermost layer is sucked by suction nozzles (30) and deformed toward decompression spaces (31a) of suction openings (31), thereby forming an air space (AS) between the sheet (10a) and another sheet (10b) located immediately therebelow. Then, while the sheet (10a) on the uppermost layer is sucked, the suction nozzles (30) are moved so that the distance therebetween decreases, thereby forming the air space (AS) in another region. Thus, the sheet (10a) is ready to be separated from and pulled off the other sheet (10b).
