The method involves measuring the carbon monoxide emissions of the exhaust gas of the burner by a carbon monoxide sensor (3). The pollution is increased till the carbon monoxide emissions of the exhaust gas of the burner exceed a determined limiting value in case, in which the emissions exceed the determined limiting value in simultaneous lower pollution, particularly the pollution which is smaller than the half of the arithmetic mean between minimum pollution and maximum pollution.
