A self-rectifying turbine 14 has a pair of rotors 15, 16 mounted within a duct 8 for contra-rotation about a common axis of rotation 17. Each rotor is configured for respective unidirectional rotation when subject to in an oscillating axial flow of fluid 13 along the duct. Each rotor has a plurality of generally radially extending fixed blades 21 of aerofoil configuration, and the blades are staggered such that their chord lines 25 make an acute angle to the axis of rotation 17, and are also twisted along their radial length. The blades may be cambered, and the rotor may have a leading edge (26 fig 6) and a trailing edge (27 fig 6) both of elliptical profile, in cross-section. Each rotor may be mounted to a separate rotatable shaft 19, 20, and both shafts may drive a single generator 11 or each shaft may drive its own respective generator. The turbine arrangement is particularly suitable for use in an oscillating water column wave energy system. |
