an encoder to output encoded data based upon received data; and a controller configured to control a device to vary at least one attribute for each of a plurality of individual plants so as to form a pattern of attributes that encodes data for later recovery, wherein the at least one attribute is selected from a group of planting location attributes consisting of: longitudinal locations relative to a predetermined longitudinal index location; and lateral locations relative to a predetermined lateral index location.
