The invention relates to a functional fitting for synchronizing and guiding the motion of a sliding door (7, 8), having a first motion range and a second motion range deviating therefrom. The functional fitting comprises at least one load-bearing fitting (9) that acts on one side of a sliding door (7, 8) of a piece of furniture and at least one guide fitting (20) that acts on the other side of the sliding door (7, 8). The motion of the guide fitting is synchronized with the motion of the load-bearing fitting (9) in a first motion range, and the motion of the guide fitting is not synchronized with the motion of the load-bearing fitting (20) in a second motion range. The sliding door (7, 8) is guided by the guide fitting (20) in the first and second motion ranges. The invention further relates to a piece of furniture having at least one sliding door (7, 8) arranged in a plane with respect to an additional closure element, and to the use of a guide rail segment (21b) movably arranged on a furniture body (1) of a piece of furniture as part of a functional fitting of a piece of furniture.
