An automatic curve tracing device comprises a scanning mechanism provided with a reference PN junction diode and two scanning PN junction diodes, each diode being adapted so that its output voltage depends upon an area associated with the diode which is exposed to light rays, the extent of such area of each scanning diode being determined by the position of the diode relative to a curve to be traced, and the displacement of the mechanism being controlled in accordance with the differences between the output of the reference diode and that of each scanning diode. As shown, Fig. 2, a scanning device 4 comprises a reference diode Ds, half obscured by a mask, and two scanning diodes D 1 , D 2 , the former being located centrally of the scanning device 4 while the latter is displaced from the centre light is reflected on to all three diodes from the paper on which a curve 5 is drawn. The scanning device 4 is driven along X and Y axes by servomechanism responsive to the difference V 1 of the outputs of Ds and D 1 , and is also rotated by servomechanism responsive to the difference V 2 of the outputs of Ds and D 2 . In the latter servomechanism, Fig. 3, V 2 is fed via an amplifier 9 to a servomotor 10 which rotates, through gearing 11, a shaft 32 on which scanning device 4 is mounted. Rotation of shaft 32 is also transmitted to a resolver 6 which is supplied with V 1 and with power from a voltage source 12. Displacement of the scanning device along X and Y axes is controlled through gearing 20, 25, by servomotors 15, 16, Fig. 4, which are fed respectively through amplifiers 17, 18, with voltages Vx and Vy derived by the resolver 6 from the voltage from source 12. In addition, voltages Vx<SP>1</SP> and Vy<SP>1</SP>, derived by the resolver from V 1 , are superimposed on Vx and Vy respectively, to effect tracing of the curve 5. Tacho-generators 19, 24 provide rate feedback for motors 15, 16, which additionally operate pulse coders 28, 29 whose outputs, representative of the position of the scanning device, are supplied through amplifiers 30, 31 to control apparatus (not shown), e.g. for indicating the configuration of the curve or for disconnecting an oxygen supply. Fig. 5 shows the scanning mechanism, head 4 comprises a light acceptor 36 containing lenses 39, and a holder 37 containing the three diodes (two only shown), and is supported for rotation in a support 33. |
