A process for forming a reinforced marginal border on a piece of leather or the like, is characterized in that a thread comprising a core and a covering of thermoplastic material is applied to a chamfered border of the workpiece, the thread is heated and the border folded back on the thread. Fig. 1 shows the chamfered edge 2 of a workpiece with thread 3 thereon and Fig. 3 shows the border after folding over and pressing down. The thermoplastic material acts as an adhesive and the core which may be of glass fibres acts as reinforcement. Fig. 5 shows apparatus for carrying out the process. In operation workpiece 1 is forwarded intermittently in the direction of arrow 31 by gripper member 19 and spring-loaded foot 17 at the same time pulling thread 3 from bobbin 29. The thread is heated by heating member 15 and the border of the workpiece is folded over on to the somewhat fluid thread of turning members 23, 27 and is pressed down under presser member 16.</p> |
