Acetylene and olefines are obtained by subjecting methane to partial combustion for 0.001-0.005 second, injecting into the resultant acetylene-containing gas a vaporised and preheated aliphatic hydrocarbon having 3-7 carbon atoms per molecule through a plurality of jets having axes at an angle of 10-30 degrees with the radii of the pyrolysis chamber and perpendicular to the gas flow, and quenching the pyrolysis gases by transverse injection of a cold fluid. Oxygen and methane or natural gas are preheated to 650-700 DEG C. and mixed within 10 milliseconds. The hydrocarbon to be pyrolysed may be a mixture such as a low aromatic naphtha boiling in the range 40-150 DEG C. and may be mixed with steam and preheated to 620 DEG C. The pyrolysis gases may be quenched with water. Specifications 876,261 and 876,263 are referred to.
