An extrusion machine with an axially adjustable screw comprises an extrusion barrel 15, the extrusion screw 13, bearing means 8, 26, 27 supporting the driven end of the screw, a sleeve 29, surrounding and supporting the bearing 8, 26, 27, and being threaded on to a member 15a that is fixed with respect to the barrel 15, and means for rotating the sleeve 29 to simultaneously move the sleeve 29, bearing means 8, 26, 27 and hence the screw 13 longitudinally of the barrel 15 to adjust a throttle 19, 19a at the outlet of the machine. The means to rotate the sleeve 29 may be a worm and wheel 38, 37 driving a pinion 34 in mesh with a gear 33 on the sleeve 29. The screw has a sealing shoulder 17 to prevent back flow of plastic material and the driving shaft 3 is splined into the bearing sleeve 8. In Fig. 4, the entire adjusting means are slidable on the base of the machine whereas in Fig. 1, the adjusting means move within a housing 4 attached to the machine.
