The disclosure is directed to determining whether or not a mobile device is indoors. The mobile device obtains a position fix based, at least in part, on an outdoor positioning system, and obtains one or more shape-files for one or more objects that are in proximity of the position fix.

1. A method for determining whether or not a mobile device is indoors, comprising:
obtaining, by the mobile device, a position fix based, at least in part, on an outdoor positioning system; obtaining, by the mobile device, one or more shape-files for one or more objects that are in proximity of the position fix, wherein obtaining the one or more shape-files comprises downloading, by the mobile device, one or more shape-files of outlines of buildings, where the outlines downloaded by the mobile device are biased based on at least one metric selected from the group consisting of: a popularity of other mobile devices inside a building, an amount of time that the mobile device has previously spent inside a building, and a frequency with which the mobile device has previously been inside a building; and determining that the mobile device is inside a given object boundary based on at least the one or more shape-files.
