This invention relates to metal halide lamp comprising a discharge vessel, shape of which is optimized to obtain a high colour rendering with a low vessel wall temperature. Thus, the lower burner temperature allows for a long life lamp that also has a very good colour rendering. The shape of the discharge vessel is optimized by shape factor s l and aspect ratio f 0 and the size for a given shape is determined by the wall loading P D .
