A magnet assembly 10 comprises a plurality of coils B - E where the radial mid-point of each coil is axially aligned with a part of the radial portion of the axially inwardly adjacent coil and compression blocks 16 are provided between adjacent coils at circumferential intervals to retain the coils in fixed relative positions. Also disclosed is a method for producing solenoidal magnets which comprises providing a bobbin with a cylindrical outer surface and end flanges where at least one of the said flanges is removable. Winding cheeks are disposed at defined axial positions around the circumference of the bobbin which are separate from one another and arranged to define winding channels and linking channels. Wire is wound into the winding channels to form coils. The coils are then impregnated with a hardening material which is allowed to harden. The bobbin, end flanges and winding cheeks are then removed from the resulting impregnated structure. An alternative method for making electromagnets comprises disposing solid compression blocks at definite axial positions around the circumference of a bobbin and placing displacers circumferentially between the blocks, impregnating the structure with a hardening material, allowing the hardening material to harden and removing the bobbin, end flanges and displacers from the resulting impregnated structure. |
