PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved electrophoretic medium and a display intended for use as a light modulator.SOLUTION: Various improvements in an electrophoretic medium and a display intended for use in a light modulator include: refractive index matching of a suspending fluid to a continuous phase surrounding the suspending fluid; refractive index matching of a capsule wall to a binder; planarization of a layer including an electrophoretic capsule before application of adhesive to the layer; a method for concentrating electrophoretic particles into a limited area of a side wall of a microcell or the electrophoretic capsule in the light transmissive state of the display; and, in the case of a light modulator having an electrophoretic layer sandwiched by two transparent plates, forming at least one of the transparent plates so as to absorb electromagnetic radiation which adversely affects the electrophoretic layer.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
