PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for promoting bone growth and calcification.SOLUTION: In a certain aspect, the invention provides compositions and methods for promoting bone growth and increasing bone density. The disclosure demonstrates in part, that molecules having activin antagonist activity or ActRIIa antagonist activity ("activin antagonist" and "ActRIIa antagonist") can be used to increase bone density and to promote bone growth, and/or to increase bone strength. In particular, the disclosure demonstrates that ActRIIa in a soluble form acts as an inhibitor of activin-ActRIIa signaling and promotes increase in bone density, bone growth and bone strength in vivo.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6 |
