PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for obtaining a glass substrate for magnetic recording medium that, in polishing a principal plane of the glass substrate, prevents sticking of the glass substrate to an upper-side polishing pad, prevents formation of a leaching trace on the glass substrate and has a superior uniform smoothness in the principal plane.SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium includes: a shape forming step for the glass substrate; a polishing step for the principal plane of the glass substrate; and a cleaning step. In the polishing step for the principal plane, an effective area ratio ((A-B)/A×100) of the polishing surface of the polishing pad is made as 75-98% in the upper-side polishing pad and 99% or more (preferably 100%) in the lower-side polishing pad. |
