825,327. Agglutinated fibrous preform. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Jan. 30, 1958 [March 12, 1957], No. 3078/58. Class 140. In a fabricated glass fibre mat or preform the fibres are preliminarily bound and oriented by a substantially dry thermoset in-situ-deposit from a catalysed oil-in-water emulsion comprising 20 to 50 parts of homopolymerized diallyl phthalate, 170 to 40 parts of monomeric diallyl phthalate and 5 to 10 parts of a non-ionic emulsifying agent. A catalyst, such as benzoyl peroxide or methyl ketone peroxide, is added in forming the emulsion. The preliminary binder retains the fibres in the desired orientation so that later the preform may be impregnated with a strength-imparting curable resin, such as a polyester together with a cross-linker, e.g. styrene, vinyltoluene, alphamethylstyrene, diallyl phthalate, triallylcyanurate, bicyclo (2,2,1)- 5 - heptene - 2,3 - dicarboxylic anhydride, methyl methacrylate or mixtures of these monomers. |
