The invention comprises thiamine derivatives of formula: <FORM:0968502/C1/1> where X is an oxygen atom or a sulphur atom, and salts thereof. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a salt of formula: <FORM:0968502/C1/2> where Met. is an alkali metal, with an equimolar amount of a reagent of formula: X1-CO-X-CH2CH=CH2 III where X1 is a halogen atom, to obtain an intermediate of formula: <FORM:0968502/C1/3> and then reacting the intermediate II1 with an equimolar amount of reagent III. Alternatively, the salt of formula II may be reacted with two equimolar amounts of reagent III. Examples are given. Compounds of formula I above and their non-toxic salts may be mixed with carriers, e.g. lactose, mannitol, corn starch, talc and magnesium stearate, and other ingredients if desired, e.g. riboflavin, pyridoxin, folic acid, biotin, inositol and mineral salts, and used in the treatment of inflammation and vitamin B1 deficiency.
