The present invention provides an exhaust gas purifying catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas containing a silicon compound, the exhaust gas purifying catalyst including: a supporting body; and a catalyst layer formed on the supporting body and having a precious metal supported on an inorganic oxide carrier, wherein the exhaust gas purifying catalyst includes an overcoat layer containing at least one of zirconia and titania on the catalyst layer. To make both initial activity and durability good, the overcoat layer is preferably formed to have a thickness of 13 to 70 µm. The present invention allows the activity to be maintained for a long period of time in purifying an exhaust gas that contains silicon.
