The control circuit for a storage heater includes an external temperature sensing device with thermal characteristics resembling those of the building to be heated, and possessing a substantial heat storage capacity. The circuit incorporates a continuously-running synchronous motor 10 (Fig. 1) controlling switches 17, 18, 19 through cams 14, 15, 16 respectively, so that switch 17 is closed only during the " offpeak " period, e.g. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., switch 18 is open during this period, and switch 19 is closed for a predetermined part of the peak period. A thermal switch 27, 28 is located in a hemispherical housing 26 mounted on the outside of a building to be heated, and is normally closed except when element 28 is heated. With switch 20 in its normal central position, thermal switch 21, 22 is energized via switches 17, 27 during the off-peak period to allow heat to be developed in storage element 23. At the end of the off-peak period switch 17 opens to break the circuit feeding heat to element 23, and switch 18 closes to cause switch 27 to open too. At the beginning of the next off-peak period switch 18 opens and switch 17 closes to complete the circuit for storage heater 23 when contacts 27 close after a delay determined by its temperature due partly to local heater 28 and partly to the external atmospheric conditions. With switch 20 in its lower position the system operates as above but an additional current is supplied to the storage heater 23 by means of switch 19 closing for a period predetermined by the shape of cam 16.</p> |
