<p>An apparatus for the treatment of solid waste comprises an autoclave treatment apparatus 24 for steam treating the waste, a screening apparatus 24 for separating a product stream from the autoclave treatment apparatus into a stream of organic-rich aqueous material and a reject stream of mechanically separable solid material, and a supercritical water oxidation reactor (SCWO) 54 for receiving the organic-rich aqueous stream from the screening apparatus and oxidizing the organic material into steam, water and carbon dioxide. The steam may be fed to a turbine 62 to create electrical power. The waste is ideally municipal solid waste. The apparatus may further comprise a dewatering device 36 and water treatment apparatus 42 wherein water and steam are recycled back to the autoclave treatment apparatus.</p> |
